This pioneering study of the three principal caste of northern India, Jats, Gujars and Ahirs was undertaken by a knowledgeable Army officer, Major A.H.Bingley in 1930s. The purpose of the study was limited: it was meant to serve as a handbook for recruiting officers in the punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the adjoining areas. But to be useful for the recruiting officers, the author had to make it as informative as was possible, not only on account of the demographic position and location of the three castes but also in respect of historical, cultural, physical,and psychological aspects of their life. The reader would thus find here not only a brief account of the origins, migrations and settlements of these castes in different regions but would also know their strengths and weaknesses,habits, attributes, customs, and so forth. It is because of this that the study is, in spite of its being based on somewhat meager evidence, interesting, lively and useful.
